Design Updates Unveiled For New Tweed Terminal
Tweed New Haven Airport took another step towards building a new, larger terminal in East Haven — according to a Thursday press release heralding the “pivotal milestone” of completing 60 percent of that project’s design.
A communications firm that works for Tweed sent out a press release with that update Thursday afternoon.
The press release states that the airport has now completed 60 percent of the design of its planned new 84,000 square-foot East Terminal. Plans to build this terminal and move the Morris Cove airport’s operations from the New Haven to the East Haven side of the property have been in the works since 2021.
“Reaching the 60% design milestone is a critical checkpoint in major infrastructure projects,” read Thursday’s press release. “At this stage, the big-picture decisions are finalized—such as terminal layout, footprint, and systems planning—while enough detail is developed to support regulatory approvals, cost estimates, and construction planning.”
She said that this level of design completion allows the airport to “continue engaging with local municipalities and the community to gather feedback and refine approaches as the permitting process advances.” It also “demonstrates to airlines, partners, and the public that Tweed’s expansion is not conceptual but advancing through real, federally recognized design stages.”
Tweed has also published a half-dozen new digital renderings reflecting the look of the planned new terminal.
Thursday’s presser comes after the airport submitted an environmental permit application to the state in April to move the expansion project forward.
“This milestone is a testament to years of planning, collaboration, and innovation,” airport CEO Michael Jones is quoted as saying in the press release.
“With every step forward, Tweed proves it is more than an airport, it’s a powerful engine of economic growth for our region,” airport authority board Chair Robert Reed is quoted as saying in the same release.

Thursday’s announcement comes more than a year and a half after the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ruled in December 2023 that Tweed can move forward with this new terminal as well as with extending the main runway from 5,600 to 6,575 feet.
The environmental nonprofit Save The Sound and the Town of East Haven have appealed that Environmental Assessment approval in a case still working its way through the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
All of this comes as the airport has seen a surge in commercial air traffic since November 2021 thanks to direct routes flown from Tweed by Avelo Airlines and, most recently, Breeze Airlines.
