Tweed-New Haven Airport gives new look at terminal expansion plan – NBC Connecticut

Tweed-New Haven Airport released new renderings Thursday of its planned expanded terminal and other additions.

The release of the renderings comes as the airport reaches 60% of the design for the new 84,000-square-foot facility.

According to Tweed, the location of the East Terminal, as it is being called, moves airplane ground noise and traffic away from the residential neighborhoods that butt up against the airport.

The new terminal would be located on the opposite side of the runway from where the existing terminal sits.

Neighbors have criticized the expansion plans over concerns it will cause congestion through their streets.

Tweed-New Haven Airport officials say reaching the 60% milestone allows them to move forward with the regulatory process, determine cost estimates, and work on construction planning for the project.

“This milestone is a testament to years of planning, collaboration, and innovation,” Michael Jones, CEO of The New HVN, said in a statement. “Through these renderings, our community can see the vision of a modernized Tweed that combines enhanced air travel, economic growth, and environmental responsibility.”

The project will impact more than nine acres of wetlands, but will enhance 28.5 acres of tidal wetlands and will create more than three acres of a new tidal salt marsh, according to Tweed.

The airport has submitted an application to the Department of Energy and Environmenal Protection for the work.

In addition to the new terminal, the expansion plans would extend the runway by 639 feet to the south and 336 feet to the north. There would be an expanded parking area for up to 4,000 vehicles as well.
